EMBL is seeking a Research Technician specialized in developing and optimizing next generation sequencing technologies to join the ‘Systems Genetics and Precision Health’ group led by Dr. Lars Steinmetz. The group develops and applies genome-wide technologies to elucidate the genetic basis of complex phenotypes,the functions and mechanisms of transcription and the genetic and molecular systems underlying diseases. The group works in an interdisciplinary manner across divers projects, integrating wet-lab and computational biology.Your roleThe Research Technician´s responsibilities will include:
- Testing, developing and evaluating new tools, reagents and experimental protocols, in particular in the field of next generation sequencing and other high-throughput technologies;
- Working in close collaboration with the EMBL Genomics Core Facility to optimize the aforementioned protocols;
- Supporting members of the laboratory throughout their scientific projects;
- Training new group members and visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory.
The Research Technician is expected to contribute to scientific projects at all stages, ranging from experimental design to manuscript preparation.
You haveApplicants should have an appropriate University degree or equivalent certificate from a technical training college in a relevant scientific subject. The successful candidate will be familiar with the biological mechanisms underlying gene expression, inheritance and genetic diversity. (S)he will have hands-on experience in high throughput technologies and expertise in next generation sequencing techniques. Experience in human tissue culture and CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering and screening applications is highly desirable.The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of young scientists within a highly collaborative international atmosphere. Flexibility as well as excellent communication skills and fluency in written and verbal English are essential.You might also haveBasic knowledge in the field of computational biology would be an asset.Why join usEMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises from a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.What else you need to knowWe are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research. Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
