Position Summary The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated Director of Bioinformatics to lead our genomic analyses at the Institute and participate in genomic initiatives to advance diagnostic genomics. This role will define best-practice standards for bioinformatics. The Director, working closely with the IGM's academic groups, Precision Medicine Initiatives, and Precision Genomics Laboratory, will lead a team in the research, design and development of systems addressing the data management and analysis needs of the IGM's major genetics and genomics projects. The incumbent will be involved in a number of projects in this capacity including efforts such as genomic and transcriptomic analyses, optimization of analyses approaches, and being an IGM point person in our interface with the medical center in helping develop general CUIMC precision medicine pipelines. This is a key role for that will lead a variety of projects and gain exposure to many productive areas of research. The Director will develop and support multiple research projects by delivering bioinformatics services for biomedical data from large datasets. A key responsibility of the position will be to train and guide a team on bioinformatics approaches. Another primary focus of the bioinformatics group will be on new analysis software development as well as the development and maintenance of the IGM's next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis pipeline to ensure that the IGM's genomic analyses remains state of the art. Responsibilities The Director of Bioinformatics demonstrates strong statistical and biological programming proficiency with proven expertise in genomics analyses and advanced knowledge of analytical methodologies. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: Lead a team to develop and implement new analysis features. Support the daily processing of large volumes of sequencing data. Write custom scripts for analysis of data derived from high-throughput techniques. Working closely with software engineering and IT, migrate data processing to a cloud service provider. Manage databases, conduct statistical and genomic analysis. Assisting staff and collaborators with data access, analysis, and interpretation. Collaborating and consulting with IGM researchers to identify problems and develop solutions for research related computational needs. Analyze data for grant and manuscript submissions. Assist with publications. Perform quality control and analysis. Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience. Preferred Qualifications M.S. or PhD. in Bioinformatics, Computer Sciences, Statistics or related discipline strongly preferred. Other Requirements Demonstrated experience with next generation sequencing analysis. Extensive knowledge of Java, C++ or other OO-based programming languages, as well as Perl, Python, Bash or other functional scripting languages. Experience designing relational database schemas and query optimization. Good organization and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to productively work as a member of a team. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
