New York State Department of Health Approves Smart In Media Digital Pathology Solution

NEW YORK – The New York State Department of Health has approved the use of Smart In Media's digital pathology solution for use at Cayuga Health System as a laboratory-developed test, the company announced on Thursday.

The PathoZoom Scan and LiveView is an image-based method for digital slide sharing that allows pathologists to scan a slide and send it as a zoomable image. It also allows for the broadcasting of a microscope view via video streaming, according to the German firm's website. The solution was approved by the NYSDOH for rapid on-site evaluation of fine needle aspirates specimens for non-gynecological testing, Smart In Media VP and General Manager Don Van Dyke said via email.

The solution also includes the firm's Slide Cloud storage component, which helps labs "multiply pathologists' availability at remote sites," the company said in a statement. The NYSDOH approval "marks a significant regulatory milestone for Smart In Media in the USA and is a key step to our broader market acceptance and use," Van Dyke said in a statement.

The firm is in the process of seeking approval from the US Food and Drug Administration, Van Dyke noted via email.
