NEW YORK (360Dx) – Lia Diagnostics today announced the US Food and Drug Administration has given 510(k) clearance for the Lia Pregnancy Test, making it the first FDA-cleared, flushable, biodegradable pregnancy test.
The test uses a proprietary coating technology, which combined with nonwoven and paper techniques, eliminates the need for plastic, rendering it water-dispersible and eco-friendly. The test is made of the same plant-based fibers as most toilet paper, according to Lia's website.
"Lia provides users with the convenience to flush their results, eliminating evidence of a pregnancy test," the company said in a statement, adding the test has an accuracy of greater than 99 percent when used on the day of an expected period.
Based in Philadelphia, Lia develops single-use diagnostics.
