Sysmex, Riken Innovation Form Diagnostic Development Alliance

NEW YORK — Sysmex and Riken Innovation said on Thursday that they have partnered to develop new diagnostic technologies and businesses, with a focus on diseases for which there are no established diagnostic methods.

Riken Innovation, a corporate subsidiary of Japanese research institute Riken, will provide its cross-disciplinary research results to the collaboration, while Sysmex will contribute its diagnostic research and development expertise. Technologies and businesses resulting from the alliance are expected to be rolled out globally, the companies said.

Further, they said, the new diagnostic technologies will be leveraged to create "treatment opportunities" for patients with diseases that have no established diagnostic methods.

Sysmex noted that it has established an open innovation laboratory at Technopark in Kobe, Japan to pursue research collaborations in Japan and elsewhere and is pursuing R&D projects to develop new diagnostic applications.

Last week, Kobe-based Sysmex signed an agreement to acquire a 24.9 percent stake in Astrego Diagnostics.
